My Drawings

The examples I provide in the posts are my own drawings.  There are more here.

These examples might help you to decide whether or not to take my advice on how to draw figures  :0)

I like this drawing for the range of tone. The paper was given a v. light shading with willow charcoal first. There is some heavy shadow, but also highlight revealed with a kneadable eraser.

Sometimes I like just drawing lines, especially using line to capture shadow. Used the edge of the charcoal here to give the whole figure some defintion.

Simple mark making helps to define some of the model's surroundings and helps the viewer to make sense of the pose.

If you are unused to using colour, then using one or two colours in a drawing can be a good introduction.

Seated woman, "Judy"

A big drawing which pretty much filled the butchers paper. It took me a while to get this pose right. I liked scrubbing some colour into the charcoal, and really enjoyed highlighting with white on the figure and providing contrast with the background shadow. Its interesting how the drawings change as you draw, and satisfying when you create something you quite like out of what looked like a certain train wreck.

Another pic that I thought was going nowhere. Finding that blue grey colour for the tattoo changed the picture, it somehow made it work, and it made me feel like the picture was going to work. In the end I liked the result.

This was from a quick 5 minute pose. We were focussing on perspective, so I liked the opportunity of drawing the head and hair big, and letting the rest of the body taper away.
